Failure Mode Analytics (FMA) with SAP Intelligent Asset Management (IAM)

A machine, equipment, or system is designed to fulfil various functions. Each of these functions can at times fail. Failure Mode is one of the ways in which a system can fail. An understanding of the Failure Modes of a system can help in improving the reliability of the system.
A group of critical systems can represent very large investments in asset-intensive industries. The effect of failures of such systems in terms of downtime, revenue loss, and cost of repairs can have a detrimental effect on operational performance.

SAP IAM for Enterprise

One of the main responsibilities of a Reliability Engineer is to control the root causes of poor reliability. Failure Model Analytics (FMA) is one of many available quantitative methods that help a Reliability Engineer eliminate guesswork.
The following figure depicts the failure mode hierarchy for a single functional failure –
SAP Intelligent Asset Management IAM

SAP Intelligent Asset Management (SAP IAM) is a suite of cloud solutions from SAP in the Enterprise Asset Management space, that promises to deliver a holistic 360-degree view of assets across the supply chain.

It builds on SAP’s strong expertise in operational asset management and adds intelligence and collaboration to it using the latest technologies like IoT, predictive analytics, mobile, networks, etc.

SAP Enterprise Asset Management customers generally have a huge volume of historical data about their assets stored in their SAP systems. Yet, they lack insight into the top causes of an asset failure. One of the reasons for this is much of the data is stored in an unstructured format in the form of ‘long-texts’. These texts can be at times multilingual, especially for global companies.

The diagram below illustrates how Failure Mode Analytics powered by SAP Intelligent Asset Management can help address the problem mentioned above.

SAP IAM Failure Mode Analytics FMA

In the event of a breakdown or a functional failure of equipment, a Maintenance Technician is tasked to restore the equipment to its working condition. The maintenance technician documents the findings of the problem and the causes in the corrective maintenance notification’s long text field. The notification long-text is updated via various sources throughout the life cycle of the notification. Over a period, a lot of valuable information about the equipment is stored in the notification long-texts. For a lot of businesses this information is lost and not properly analysed, losing valuable insights.

SAP Intelligent Asset Management

With SAP Intelligent Asset Management this data can instead be used to better improve the efficiencies of equipment. It is now possible to replicate the equipment and the notifications to SAP IAM. In SAP IAM, machine learning techniques can then be applied to transform millions of lines of text into meaningful insights in the form of Failure Mode Analytics (FMA).

You can watch this video to see how FMA is generated for a power transformer with help of SAP IAM.
