At On Device Solutions, we’re always looking ahead – anticipating changes, new innovations, and how our clients can stay a step ahead in their digital enterprise journeys.
In a recent SAP webinar, a major update was revealed that will impact logistics and asset management across multiple industries: the introduction of two new mobile personas within the SAP Service and Asset Manager (SSAM) – the Warehouse Clerk and the Field Logistics Operator.
These enhancements represent a leap forward from the existing Inventory Clerk persona and signal SAP’s commitment to extending mobile usability across more granular operational roles, especially within warehouse management (EWM) and field logistics for industries like oil and gas.
Note: SAP is now referring to SSAM under the broader term SAP Mobile Execution and Dynamic Forms, reflecting its expanded mobile capabilities. In this article, we continue to reference SSAM for clarity, while also recognising this important evolution in SAP’s mobility strategy.
From Inventory Clerk to Specialised Personas
Until now, SAP Mobile Execution and Dynamic Forms supported an Inventory Clerk persona. This role was primarily designed for executing fundamental tasks like goods receipts, issues, stock transfers, and physical inventory counts. It served as a functional but generalist mobile role – efficient but not tailored for more complex operations. Recognising the need for more role-specific functionality, SAP is now expanding the scope with:
- Warehouse Clerk Persona – Designed specifically for EWM users, enabling them to manage warehouse operations, resources, and warehouse task confirmations on the go.
- Field Logistics Operator Persona – Aimed at industries such as oil and gas, where managing inbound logistics at remote plants is a critical and specialised task.
Let’s break down the capabilities of these two new personas.
Warehouse Clerk Persona: Precision for EWM Tasks
Planned for release in SSAM 2505 (Q2 2025), the Warehouse Clerk persona is built for operational efficiency in warehouses powered by SAP EWM. Key features include:
- Resource Management: Claim and release resources for executing tasks.
- Warehouse Order and Task Management: Search, download and assign orders and tasks, even without formal resource management activated.
- Task Execution: Confirm tasks, handle serialised and batch-managed items, manage exceptions, and maintain handling units.
- Physical Inventory: Support for EWM physical inventory counts and assignment.
- User Experience: A modern mobile UI with support for offline mode, camera scanning, and bulk updates via editable tables.
For any enterprise relying on EWM, this persona finally brings the warehouse floor into the mobile era – enabling faster, smarter, and more accurate execution of tasks.
Field Logistics Operator Persona: Mobile Power for Remote Operations
The Field Logistics Operator persona focuses on complex logistics workflows at remote plants – particularly relevant for industries like oil and gas where field supply chain execution is business-critical. Also planned for SAP Mobile Execution and Dynamic Forms 2505, its capabilities include:
- Voyage Management: Set voyage status, auto-download voyage data, and manage inbound logistics at the plant.
- Container and Package Handling: Receive, edit and track delivery items, handling units and packages.
- Ad-Hoc Search: Find relevant logistics items without preloading – essential for dynamic, remote scenarios.
- Offline Mode and Camera Scanning: Critical for field workers where connectivity is limited.
This persona not only enhances SAP’s reach into field logistics but transforms how goods are tracked and managed from port to plant.
Three Personas, Three Use Cases
With these additions, SAP SSAM now supports three logistics personas – each with a distinct focus:
Persona | Key Functions | Ideal Use Case |
Inventory Clerk | Goods receipts, issues, transfers, and inventory counts | Basic IM operations in warehouse settings |
Warehouse Clerk | Full EWM operations, resource and task management, physical inventory | Complex EWM-managed warehouses |
Field Logistics Operator | Remote inbound logistics, voyage and container handling | Oil & gas and other field-based industries |
Together, they offer a more comprehensive and role-specific mobile experience – a necessary evolution as SAP customers modernise and further mobilise their logistics processes.
An Opportunity to Extend Support Further
SAP’s introduction of the Warehouse Clerk and Field Logistics Operator personas is a major step in advancing mobile support for EWM and complex logistics scenarios. These developments clearly demonstrate SAP’s focus on enhancing field and warehouse operations through Service and Asset Manager.
However, from our experience working with clients across industries, we know that many organisations continue to operate on SAP ECC using the classic WM module — now referred to as Stock Room Management in S/4HANA. This remains a critical area where mobile enablement is still needed.
As a trusted SAP partner, On Device Solutions is committed to supporting these customers. We’re actively working to help bridge this functional space, ensuring that even those not yet on EWM or operating in remote logistics scenarios can benefit from mobile capabilities tailored to their environment.
