SAP is bringing its application development, integration, data, and AI capabilities closer together through SAP Business AI Platform.

The aim is to provide the technological foundation for AI agents that can understand business context, coordinate tasks and support the execution of business processes within a governed enterprise environment.
For organisations already using SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) or SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC), this does not mean replacing existing investments or moving current workloads to an entirely new platform. Instead, established SAP BTP and SAP BDC capabilities will become more closely connected with SAP’s AI technologies, while new services will support the development, operation and governance of AI agents.
So, what is changing, what will remain the same, and what should SAP customers be aware of?
What is SAP Business AI Platform?
SAP Business AI Platform brings together the technologies needed to build AI-enabled applications, workflows and agents; provide them with relevant business context; and manage them securely.
Its capabilities can broadly be viewed in three areas:
- Build: SAP Joule Studio, SAP Build, SAP Integration Suite and other SAP BTP development services will support the creation of applications, workflows, integrations and AI agents.
- Contextualise and reason: SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Knowledge Graph will provide trusted data, business meaning and process context to help AI capabilities generate more relevant results.
- Govern: Security, identity and access controls, monitoring and governance will extend across applications, agents, large language models and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
Capabilities for application lifecycle management, security, interoperability, administration and operations support these areas.
SAP Business AI Platform therefore represents more than a change in naming. It brings existing technologies into a more connected framework while adding services designed specifically for enterprise AI.
What does SAP Business AI Platform mean for existing SAP BTP customers?
The immediate impact on existing SAP BTP customers should be limited. SAP Build, SAP Integration Suite, Cloud Foundry, Kyma and other established SAP BTP services will continue to be available and developed.
SAP has also indicated that:
- existing applications and services can continue to operate;
- current licensing and consumption arrangements will remain in place;
- customers will not need to move their existing SAP BTP workloads to a new platform; and
- SAP Integration Suite will remain SAP’s principal integration solution.
The significant development is not the removal of SAP BTP, but its closer connection with SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP’s expanding AI capabilities.
Joule Studio introduces an AI-first development environment
Joule Studio is one of the major additions within SAP Business AI Platform. It is intended to provide an AI-first environment for building and managing custom agents, applications and workflows.
Planned capabilities include:
- intent-based development using natural-language instructions;
- access to SAP business-process, data and system context;
- orchestration of agents and workflows;
- support for SAP and non-SAP application frameworks; and
- a managed Joule Studio runtime.
Joule Studio is currently in an early-adopter phase, with general availability planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The managed runtime is an important distinction. Many existing SAP BTP environments are managed by the customer, whereas Joule Studio and its runtime will be managed by SAP. Organisations using both models will therefore need to consider how the SAP-managed and customer-managed environments fit within their operational approach.
SAP Integration Suite is developing for Agentic AI
SAP Integration Suite will continue to play a central role in connecting SAP and non-SAP environments. Its roadmap is also expanding to address the integration requirements of AI agents.
Planned developments include:
- creating integration artefacts through natural-language instructions;
- enabling agent-to-agent integration;
- managing and governing MCP servers; and
- providing a migration agent to support moves from SAP Process Integration and SAP Process Orchestration to SAP Integration Suite.
SAP also plans to extend identity and access management beyond human users to AI agents. Further developments include enhanced FinOps capabilities and broader availability across sovereign-cloud environments.
Together, these changes are intended to help organisations manage AI agents with the same level of enterprise control expected across their wider SAP landscape.
SAP Business Data Cloud provides the data foundation
AI agents need more than access to large volumes of information. To deliver useful results in an enterprise environment, they need trusted data and an understanding of the relationships between business processes, systems and information.
SAP Business Data Cloud will provide this data and semantic foundation for SAP Business AI Platform. SAP has confirmed continued investment in established components, including SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud and tools supporting SAP BW modernisation.
Current and planned developments include:
- more than 300 SAP-managed data products already available, with approximately 400 to 500 planned by the end of 2026;
- SAP HANA Cloud and SAP Master Data Governance becoming part of the wider SAP Business Data Cloud offering;
- SAP Databricks and SAP Snowflake options for greenfield deployments;
- SAP BDC Connect for organisations already using Databricks, Snowflake or Google platforms;
- planned SAP BDC Connect support for Microsoft and AWS during the second half of 2026;
- additional tools for moving SAP BW data, queries and data flows into SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Datasphere; and
- new AI agents supporting analytics, planning, insight generation, model creation and data-product development.
For organisations without an existing data platform, SAP’s managed Databricks or Snowflake options are the recommended starting point. Businesses that already use these technologies can generally connect them through SAP BDC Connect rather than maintaining a duplicate environment.
What role does SAP Knowledge Graph play?
SAP Knowledge Graph is intended to help AI capabilities understand the relationships between business data, systems and processes. This context can help Joule Studio and other AI capabilities deliver more relevant and explainable outputs.
It is not currently positioned as a standalone, general-purpose knowledge-graph product. Instead, it operates behind SAP solutions as part of the wider contextual foundation supporting SAP Business AI Platform.
Preparing for a more connected SAP AI landscape
SAP Business AI Platform does not replace SAP BTP or SAP Business Data Cloud. It brings their development, integration and data capabilities into a more closely connected AI framework, with additional tools for building, contextualising, operating and governing enterprise AI agents.
Existing SAP investments can continue, while organisations assess where agentic AI may create practical value across their processes. The priority is not an immediate platform migration, but understanding how current application, integration and data strategies can support the capabilities that SAP is introducing.
