SAP Asset Performance Management (SAP APM) helps teams keep maintenance strategies current while asset knowledge and operating conditions change.
The SAP APM updates spanning releases 2606–2608 introduce reassessment capabilities, more flexible recommendation management and improvements to asset information, risk assessment and application support.
For organisations using or considering SAP APM, these developments strengthen the connection between defining a maintenance strategy and managing the work that follows.
Revisiting assessments when conditions change
Maintenance assessments need to reflect new information, including manufacturer revisions and feedback from the field. Formal reassessment and versioning help reliability engineers incorporate these inputs while retaining the history of earlier decisions.
The updates include reassessment for Strategy Assessments for Classes and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) assessments. Release 2608 also introduces reassessment for reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) assessments.
For a released RCM assessment, engineers can use the Reassess action to create a new editable version. Before proceeding, a summary highlights items requiring attention, such as questionnaire changes, invalid technical objects and recommendations that will not carry forward.
The new version retains valid content, recommendations and role assignments. The previous assessment remains released until its replacement is released, at which point it becomes obsolete. This allows teams to review their analysis while preserving continuity and a traceable assessment history.
Structured participant and role management also supports strategy and FMEA assessments, allowing teams to record who contributed and the responsibilities they held within the assessment.
Standardising consequence assessments
The new Manage Templates for Consequence Assessments app gives reliability engineers and administrators a reusable framework for defining how consequences are evaluated.
Templates specify the impacts to assess, scoring dimensions and scales, a calculation formula and colour-coded severity thresholds. Teams can align these elements with company policies and industry standards.
Once released, a template is locked and versioned, preserving the framework used for an assessment. A controlled lifecycle supports subsequent revisions.
For organisations working across multiple sites or teams, reusable templates support more consistent consequence assessments and reduce repeated configuration work.
Making recommendations easier to prioritise and manage
Several updates address the work involved in reviewing, prioritising and implementing maintenance recommendations.
Criticality and obligatory fields allow planners to identify recommendations that require particular attention, including safety-critical or mandatory work. Available in both Manage Recommendations and Implement Recommendations, these fields also support filtering and reporting.
A Roles and Responsibilities section records ownership within each recommendation. Teams can assign multiple users to a role or give one user several roles, reflecting how responsibilities are shared in practice. This establishes ownership information that can support future approval and workflow developments.
Bulk status changes reduce repetitive administration. In Manage Recommendations, planners can select recommendations with the same status and update them together. Supported direct transitions from ‘In Process’ or ‘In Review’ to ‘Released’ also reduce the intermediate steps.
Assigning task lists and consolidating recommendations
When several recommendations require the same maintenance tasks, planners can now assign task lists in a single operation from Implement Recommendations.
The action supports up to ten recommendations at a time in ‘Implementation in Progress’ status. Planners select task lists through the existing dialogue, filtered by planning plant. The system skips task lists already assigned to a recommendation and provides feedback on the outcome, including partial success or errors.
This is particularly relevant after an RCM or FMEA analysis produces several recommendations requiring the same task lists.
Consolidation also covers a wider range of recommendations. Teams can now consolidate recommendations containing maintenance plans, task lists or rules, and combine assessment-based recommendations with standalone recommendations. These changes help planners manage duplicate or overlapping items with fewer separate records.
Improving access to asset information
A navigation button on the SAP APM Technical Object details page opens the corresponding SAP S/4HANA record in a new browser tab.
The navigation uses the existing integration and authorisation framework, respecting object-level permissions. It is available for supported SAP S/4HANA environments, while the button remains hidden for SAP ERP ECC releases.
SAP Asset Performance Management also provides clearer information when Reference Designator library or Industrial System Template versions become obsolete.
For an affected Industrial System Instance, information messages identify an obsolete library version when a newer version is available and highlight the changes. Associated instances and assessments also show relevant template version obsolescence information.
This gives engineers the context to decide whether to adopt a newer version or continue using the current one.
Transporting asset health monitoring rules
Cross-tenant transport for rules and data sets is included with early adopter access.
The transport mechanism allows teams to export rules and data sets from one SAP APM tenant and import them into another. For example, rules validated in a quality or test environment can move to production without having to be recreated manually.
This supports consistent rule logic across environments and reduces the risk of errors introduced during manual configuration.
Extending SAP APM and accessing support
A developer adaptation framework supports customers and partners in building and deploying more complex extensions within SAP Asset Performance Management. It provides a structured approach to adapting functionality for industry requirements and specific business processes.
SAP Built-In Support also brings help into the SAP APM Fiori Launchpad. A side panel provides documentation relevant to the current page, searches across SAP Support and SAP Community content, and supports incident creation without leaving the application.
