What Is the SAP Alert Notification Service?
The SAP Alert Notification Service provides a unified API for publishers to issue alerts and for subscribers to receive them. It is designed to automatically deliver real-time notifications about events that may be of interest to business operations and critical to technical performance.
As part of the DevOps portfolio on SAP BTP, this service delivers real-time insights for both cloud-native and hybrid solutions. It introduces a standardised, environment-agnostic model across SAP BTP, enabling consistent configuration and event management.
Key Features
The SAP Alert Notification Service includes:
- Delivery of Platform Events
Get vital technical updates on the health and performance of your SAP BTP resources. - Event Filtering
Subscribe only to the events that matter most to your operations. - Multiple Delivery Options
Alerts can be sent through your preferred communication channels or integrated into your monitoring tools. - Custom Event Publishing
Generate and receive alerts for your own applications using a simple REST API. Java-based applications can benefit from open-source Java and Node.js libraries. These custom alerts are treated just like built-in ones. - Multitenancy Support
Enable tenant-aware applications to run on shared compute resources used by multiple consumers.
Use Cases for SAP Alert Notification Service (ANS)
SAP ANS supports a wide range of real-world scenarios, such as:
- Alerting DevOps teams about service outages
- Monitoring for memory, CPU, or quota overuse
- Notifying business users about integration or process failures
- Sending alerts related to tenant availability issues
- Triggering automated workflows for incident remediation
Supported Environments
SAP Alert Notification Service is available on the following SAP BTP environments:
- Neo
- Cloud Foundry
- Kyma
Basic SAP ANS Structure
The following diagram illustrates how SAP Alert Notification Service keeps your teams informed in real time:
Event Sources:
Events can originate from:
- SAP BTP services and runtimes
- Custom cloud applications
- IaaS platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure)
- Third-party or external tools
These events are then injected into the alert service.
Intelligent Alert Handling
Each event is evaluated against your defined rules and filters. Based on these configurations, the service can:
- Notify teams via email, Microsoft Teams, or Slack
- Trigger automated workflows via SAP Workflow Management or SAP Automation Pilot
Flexible Delivery Options
Alerts can be sent to:
- DevOps or SRE teams using messaging tools
- SAP operations platforms (e.g., Solution Manager, Focused Run, Cloud ALM)
- Third-party systems or custom tools using webhooks
Why Use SAP ANS?
With SAP ANS, your teams benefit from real-time visibility, quicker incident resolution, and automated issue handling. It collects event data from various sources – such as SAP services, custom applications, IaaS platforms, or external tools – and processes these against defined logic.
Once triggered, the service delivers alerts or initiates automation, enabling your operations teams to react swiftly and confidently.
SAP ANS vs. Other Alerting Tools
Feature | SAP ANS | Azure Monitor | AWS SNS |
Native to SAP BTP | ✅ Yes | ❌ No | ❌ No |
Retry & Fallback Logic | ✅ Built-in | ⚠️ Limited | ⚠️ Custom logic |
Microsoft Teams Integration | ✅ Via webhook template | ✅ Native | ⚠️ Requires Lambda Bridge |
Custom Event API | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
Why it matters: SAP ANS is purpose-built for SAP landscapes and integrates smoothly across both SAP and non-SAP systems – ideal for hybrid environments.
Core Capabilities of SAP ANS
- Automatic Retry for Failed Alerts
- The system attempts delivery up to 7
- The time between retries increases gradually to avoid overload. (E.g.10,10,30,30,120,300)
- For STORE type alerts (saved actions), retry intervals are longer (e.g., 60, 120, 300, 1200, 3600, 10800).
- Fallback Actions
If all retries fail, the system can execute a fallback action, such as:
- Sending alerts to an alternative channel
- Triggering a different action immediately or after fewer retries
- Event Ordering
To avoid confusion:
- Related alerts are delivered in the correct sequence
- Later events are delayed until earlier ones are delivered or discarded
- Ordering is preserved within each action type
